The latest installment in the Female Pelvic Surgery Video Atlas Series focuses on surgical techniques for urinary incontinence. In addition to an abbreviated surgical atlas compiled by experts in the management of urinary incontinence, the book is accompanied by a full complement of videos for each technique described in the text.
The video atlas provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary surgical techniques for both stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI). The book also includes a discussion of complications and potential pitfalls associated with the implantation of mesh during anti-incontinence procedures.
The book is most suitable for urologic and gynecologic surgeons who provide operative treatments for the management of urinary incontinence. The book is incredibly practical in nature but is written for an audience of practitioners already familiar with female pelvic reconstructive surgery. An experienced pelvic reconstructive surgeon may also fnd the video atlas helpful for tips regarding procedures that are not in their everyday repertoire.
After providing an overview of the etiology and epidemiology of urinary incontinence, the video atlas focuses on the preoperative evaluation and surgical management of patients with SUI. Following sections focused on procedure selection and a review of the anatomy relevant to SUI procedures, chapters are dedicated to retropubic slings, transobturator slings, biologic pubovaginal slings and urethral bulking agents. Although the fate of single-incision slings has yet to be determined, the atlas is comprehensive and a chapter is included on the technique employed by various single-incision slings. Chapters are also dedicated to surgical treatments for UUI, including sacral neuromodulation, botulinum toxin therapy and bladder augmentation. In addition to providing information on surgical techniques, chapters 9 and 14 focus on potential complications of anti-incontinence procedures. In contrast to earlier editions of the series, the videos are accessed on-line using an activation code provided with each textbook.
Urologic and gynecologic surgeons who treat patients with urinary incontinence should look to this up-to-date surgical atlas for helpful videos and concise descriptions of surgical techniques. The book provides a practical guide for both novice and experienced female pelvic reconstructive surgeons and the videos add an invaluable teaching tool. Overall, it would be a helpful addition to the collection of any urologic or gynecologic training program or the bookshelf of a pelvic reconstructive surgeon.
